An ant trail is the only pest evidence that will actually lead you to the answer if you follow it, and it takes about five minutes.
Most pest evidence is static. Droppings sit where they were left. A cast skin tells you something was there. A mud tube shows a route that may be abandoned. An ant trail is live, directional, and running in both directions right now — and it is literally a line pointing at the colony.
Which makes ants unique among pest calls: you can do most of the diagnostic work yourself, standing in your kitchen, with no equipment at all. Not identify the species, necessarily. But you can establish where they're going, where they're coming from, whether the nest is inside your structure or outside it, and what they're currently feeding on — and those four things determine nearly everything about the treatment.
And almost nobody does it, because the instinct on seeing a line of ants is to remove the line. Which destroys the only thing that was going to tell you where they live.
So before the cloth comes out: five minutes of watching, in a particular order.

Do these in order. No equipment needed beyond a torch for the last one.
Watch the direction of travel. There are two streams on any established trail. Follow the loaded ones — they're returning to the nest. Some carry visible fragments; sugar-feeders carry nothing you can see but move purposefully in one direction.
Follow that stream to the wall and mark where it disappears. Behind a baseboard, into a plumbing penetration, under a threshold, along a window frame, up a cabinet edge, into an outlet cover, or down from a ceiling edge. That vanishing point is where treatment goes.
Establish which wall it is. This is the question that sorts the whole job. An exterior wall, at floor level, at a threshold or window frame usually means the colony is outside. An interior partition, a ceiling edge, or a plumbing chase means the nest is inside your structure — there's nothing beyond that wall except more house.
Check outside along the same wall. If it's an exterior wall, go out and look. Foundation cracks, expansion joints, utility penetrations, weep holes, siding gaps, and anywhere mulch, vegetation, or firewood touches the structure. If the trail continues outside, you've confirmed an outdoor colony and located the entry point in one step.
Look at what they're feeding on. Sugar spill, grease, pet food, a dropped fragment of meat, a dripping tap, a plant saucer. This determines which bait works, and it's the most common reason bait gets ignored.
Carpenter ants are most active at night, and a torch along baseboards and exterior walls after dusk frequently reveals a trail that's invisible during the day.
The single most common reason a bait "doesn't work."
Ant colonies don't eat one thing. Nutritional demand shifts through the year according to what the colony is doing — heavily toward sugars at some stages, heavily toward protein and fat at others, driven by brood stage and season.
Offer a sugar bait to a colony currently provisioning brood with protein and the workers walk straight past it. The householder concludes bait doesn't work. It works — it was the wrong menu.
How to read it: sugar-feeders carry nothing visible, transporting liquid internally. Protein-feeders carry solid fragments, and it's obvious once you look.
And note what they've ignored. If there's an accessible sugar source they're walking past, that's a stronger signal than what they're taking.
What we do with it: where preference is clear, the matching bait goes down. Where it isn't, both go down side by side and the ants decide — and their choice tells us more in an hour than a description does.
And it's why placements get reviewed. A colony that switches preference mid-programme abandons a placement that was working perfectly a fortnight earlier. That's not failure and it's not resistance — it's a menu change, and the answer is to switch with them.
Spray the trail. It kills a fraction of the workers, breaks the route, and leaves the queens untouched. The colony reroutes, frequently somewhere you can't see — inside a wall rather than along a baseboard.
And in some species, disturbance triggers budding. Pharaoh ants most notoriously, responding to chemical stress by splitting and dispersing queens and brood to new locations. This is the specific mechanism behind "it got worse after I sprayed."
Wipe the trail before you've followed it. The pheromone line is the map. Wipe it and you've removed the directional information you were about to use.
Do wipe it with soapy water afterward if you want it gone before we arrive — that removes the pheromone without leaving a repellent barrier that would interfere with bait later.
Put down a random supermarket bait without knowing the preference. A rejected bait teaches you nothing and can leave residue that complicates the placement that follows.
And tell us what you've already applied. Residual repellent near a placement makes ants avoid it — a second reason bait gets ignored that has nothing to do with the menu.

Common species: pavement ants under paving, driveways, and slab edges. Odorous house ants in soil, under stones, mulch, and landscape timbers. Various larger species from woodpiles and vegetation.
What's supporting it: something on your grounds. Mulch piled to the foundation, soil raised above the siding line, firewood on the ground against the building, dense ground cover at the wall, vegetation or branches touching the structure, and paving with gaps against the foundation.
What it usually doesn't need: an indoor programme or a monthly plan.
The signature: trail emerging from an interior partition, a ceiling edge, or a plumbing chase. Present in winter. Appearing in bathrooms with no food source. Multiple rooms without an obvious exterior route.
Common species: carpenter ants in damp structural timber. Pharaoh ants in wall voids, insulation, and behind fixtures. Odorous house ants with satellite nests established indoors.
What's supporting it: almost always moisture. Carpenter ants excavate wood that's already softened, so a nest inside a structure sits in timber that's damp for a reason — a roof or gutter leak, failed flashing, a leaking window frame, a plumbing leak in a wall, crawlspace condensation, or a chronically wet sill plate.
Your observation tells us where. A photograph tells us which — and that decides the method.
Photograph against a coin for scale. Size, colour, and whether the waist has one node or two are what identification turns on, and they're hard to describe.
Small and dark; crush one and it smells of rotten coconut or blue cheese — a reliable field test. Large colonies with multiple queens and a readiness to form satellites.
Small, dark, nesting under paving and slab edges.
Large, black or black and red. Coarse shavings with insect fragments beneath a hole, faint rustling in a wall at night, and large ants indoors in winter, which means a nest inside.
Very small, pale yellow to light brown, multiple queens, indoor nesting, and the strongest budding response of any species. Bait-only is the correct protocol.
Slow-acting bait, matched to preference. It has to be slow — a bait that kills a forager before it gets home kills one ant and warns the colony. Where preference is unclear, both formulations go down.
Placement beats volume. Small amounts directly on the trail and at the vanishing point, in multiple locations, out of reach of children and pets. The total material in a well-placed ant programme is measured in grams.
Review and switch, because colonies change preference on their own schedule.
Non-repellent residual where warranted. Ants can't detect it, so they walk through treated zones normally and transfer it by contact and grooming — the opposite of a repellent.
Void dusting where the nest sits inside a cavity.
Direct nest treatment where the nest is located and accessible.
Exterior perimeter work for outdoor colonies, targeted to the crossing band.
Exclusion, sealing the entry the trail identified.
And moisture assessment on every indoor colony call.
Noticeable reduction within days on a correctly matched bait, with full collapse taking longer because the material has to reach queens and brood. Indoor colonies take longer, because locating the nest is most of the job.
Sugars and greases. Spills, sticky residue in cabinets, drink cans in recycling, fruit left out, pet food bowls, jars with residue on the thread. This list covers both preference states, which is why a kitchen clean on both counts is a much harder target regardless of season.
Water. Leaking traps and taps, condensation on pipes, damp under sinks, plant saucers, and pet water bowls. Ants indoors during a dry spell are there for water, and a single weeping trap sustains a colony indefinitely.
Access. Vegetation, mulch, and soil touching the structure; branches on the roof; firewood against siding; gaps at penetrations, weep holes, thresholds, and window frames.

The trail observation is a staff skill worth teaching. Someone who notes the direction, the vanishing point, and what the ants are on gives a technician the same five data points a homeowner would — and without it, the report arrives as "ants in the kitchen" a week later.
Food premises are the hardest preference environment, because both sugars and proteins are available in quantity continuously. A bait competing against an open kitchen has to be genuinely attractive.
Placement has to account for cleaning schedules. Bait washed off nightly achieves nothing.
Perimeter work and exclusion do more than repeated interior treatment.
Multi-unit residential is a shared-structure problem. A colony nesting in one wall void feeds several units.
