Most people who think they have bed bugs are looking in the wrong place, with the wrong light, for the wrong thing.
They're looking at their skin. Bites are the reason almost everyone calls, and bites are the least reliable evidence in this entire field — reactions vary so enormously between individuals that one person can be covered in welts while their partner in the same bed shows nothing at all. A substantial proportion of people never react visibly. Reactions are delayed by days. And several completely unrelated conditions produce identical marks.
Meanwhile the actual evidence is eighteen inches away, in a seam, and it's been there longer than the bites have.
The confirmation is genuinely findable yourself. It takes a torch, twenty minutes, and knowing the four places to look and the five things to look for. And it matters enormously in both directions — because more than half the people who call about bed bugs don't have them, and finding that out for free beats paying for an inspection to tell you.
If you do have them, you'll also have established roughly how far it's spread, which is the single largest factor in what treatment costs.

You need a torch. Overhead room lighting does not reach into a seam, and that's where they are. A phone torch works; a proper one is better.
Work in this order, because it follows how they spread.
The mattress. Seams first, then the piping around the edges, then under the label. Run your finger along the seam and look into it rather than at it. Then the corners, which is where they concentrate.
The box spring. This is the place most people skip and where evidence is most often found. Lift the bed and look at the underside. Then check the fabric cover on the bottom — you may need to peel a corner back gently, and the frame joints beneath it.
The frame and headboard. Every joint, screw hole, and crevice. Headboards mounted to the wall need lifting off — the back of a headboard and the wall behind it is a classic harbourage point and it's completely hidden in normal use.
Outward from the bed. Bedside tables, the drawer runners, the first few feet of baseboard, and the seams of any upholstered furniture in the room. Note where you stop finding evidence — that boundary is the scope, and it's the most useful thing you can tell us.
Take photographs of anything you find, against a coin for scale where possible.

Nymphs are much smaller, paler, and easily missed, and newly hatched ones are nearly translucent. Most people are looking for adults and walking past everything else.
Hollow amber shells that keep the shape of the insect, left behind at each of five moults. These persist far longer than the insects and are frequently the first hard evidence found — and they're easier to spot than live insects because they don't move away from a torch.
Small dark marks on sheets, mattress seams, the label, the headboard, and the top edge of baseboards. On fabric it bleeds slightly at the edges, like ink on paper — that bleeding is the distinguishing feature. This is the most commonly found evidence in real inspections.
Roughly a millimetre, pearly white, cemented into cracks and seams in small groups. Difficult to see without magnification and good light — but if you find them, they're conclusive, and they matter because they resist most insecticides.
A sweet, musty smell in established infestations. An indicator of scale rather than a diagnostic — if you can smell it, it isn't small and it isn't confined to the mattress.
Any one of those is confirmation. None of them, after a proper twenty-minute search, is meaningful reassurance — and that's a legitimate reason to stop worrying rather than book a treatment.
Worth being specific, because this is what most people are working from.
Reaction varies enormously between individuals. Two people in the same bed, bitten the same number of times, can present completely differently — one covered, one showing nothing. So "only one of us has bites" is not evidence against bed bugs, and it's not evidence for them either.
Reactions are delayed. Marks can appear days after the bite, which means "I got bitten last night" is frequently wrong about the night.
The patterns aren't diagnostic. Lines and clusters of three get described online as a signature, and they do occur — but so do random distributions, and so do bites from fleas, mosquitoes, and mites.
And several non-pest conditions produce identical marks — contact dermatitis from a new detergent or fabric, hives, folliculitis, and simple dry skin.
Which is why anyone who diagnoses bed bugs from a description of bites alone is guessing — and why we won't treat without physical evidence.
Move to another room. Bed bugs follow the carbon dioxide of a sleeping host. Move to the sofa or the spare room and within days the population begins establishing there too — converting a bedroom problem into a whole-property one. Stay in your bed. It feels wrong and it's correct.
Start moving belongings. Bagging clothing and carrying it to another room, or relocating furniture away from the bed, transports insects and seeds harbourage where there wasn't any. Bag things and leave them where they are.
Throw out the mattress. Frequently unnecessary, expensive, and carrying it through the building spreads insects down the hallway and stairwell. If something genuinely can't be treated we'll tell you, and how to wrap and label it.
Spray anything. Retail products rarely reach harbourage, they scatter insects out of known locations into ones nobody has found, and repeated partial exposure selects for resistance. Foggers are the worst version — they deposit product where bed bugs don't live and push the population outward.
