There is a version of almost every pest call where the customer arrives with the answer already in hand, and it takes about ten minutes to get there.
Not a diagnosis — that's ours. But the raw material for one: a photograph with a coin in it, an exact location rather than a room, a time of day, a direction of travel, a count. The observations that a technician would otherwise spend the first part of the visit collecting, and which are frequently gone by the time anyone arrives because they were cleaned up, swept away, or simply not noticed.
The difference in outcome is larger than it sounds. A vague call books a generalist visit that starts from zero. A specific one books a visit that starts halfway through — right equipment in the van, right bait, shorter inspection, and more of the hour spent on the actual problem.
And sometimes it books nothing at all, because the honest answer to a good photograph is occasionally that you don't need us.
So this page is the whole checklist, across every service we provide. What to look at, how to look at it safely, what it tells us, and what not to do while you're looking.

Whatever the pest, these five get used.
A photograph with scale. Against a coin, or anything of known size. Scale is the single most useful element and the one nobody includes. Close, in good light, from directly above where the insect allows it. A specimen in a sealed bag beats any photo — a few minutes in the freezer stops a live one without damaging the identification features.
Exactly where. Not "the kitchen." On the counter, in a cabinet corner, at the window, near the drain, along the baseboard, at the threshold, on the ceiling edge. Position within a room narrows the problem more than the room does.
When. Time of day, and whether it followed anything — heavy rain, a cold snap, building work, a delivery, a trip away, second-hand furniture.
One or many. A single insect is an event. Repeated sightings in one place are a pattern. Sightings across several rooms suggest something breeding indoors.
What's already been applied. Any spray, any bait, any traps, any holes sealed. This changes the approach more than people expect — residual repellent near a placement makes bait fail, and there's no judgement in the question.
Follow the loaded ants, which are heading home. Note where the line disappears into a wall, and whether that's an exterior wall or an interior partition — that single fact sorts the whole job into a sealing problem or a nest-in-a-wet-wall problem. Then note what they're feeding on, because bait has to match current preference or it gets walked past.
Small and tan with two dark stripes behind the head is a multi-visit programme. Large and glossy black near a drain is a moisture problem. Largest, reddish-brown with a pale figure-of-eight, is usually a drain route. Large but in a living room near a door is an outdoor species that needs nothing. Photograph from above, with a coin.
Time of day and what it sounds like. Elevation — ceiling points at the roof line, floor level at the foundation. Where droppings concentrate, photographed before cleaning. And when it started, because sudden autumn activity means the building was always open.
Mattress seams and piping, the box spring underside and its fabric cover, frame joints, and the headboard and wall behind it. Looking for live insects, cast skins, dark spotting that bleeds on fabric, or pearly eggs. Note where you stop finding evidence — that's the scope.
Swarmers into a sealed container before anything else. Wings onto paper rather than into a vacuum. Photograph mud tubes, then break one short section and check in a few days — repaired means active. Frass into a container.
Nest shape identifies the species and you never need to approach. Open comb on a stalk, grey enclosed football, or a stream of insects into a hole with no nest visible.
Fifteen minutes, working outward from the house, tipping everything. Start within ten feet of the walls — saucers, gutters, downspout extensions, bin lids.
Twenty minutes with a view of the roof line. What emerges, when, from exactly where, how many — and whether one animal makes repeated trips, which means young.
Every one of these is well-intentioned and every one costs.
Spray the ant trail. It kills a fraction of the workers, breaks the route, and in some species triggers the colony to split into several. Wipe with soapy water instead.
Use a fogger. Product goes where cockroaches and bed bugs don't live, populations get pushed deeper into voids and into neighbouring rooms, and every subsequent treatment takes longer.
Seal a hole if you suspect rodents or wildlife inside. You may seal something in — or a litter — and the damage of getting out exceeds the damage of getting in.
Move rooms if you suspect bed bugs. They follow the carbon dioxide of a sleeping host.
Approach a nest if anyone has a sting allergy — not even to photograph it.
Clean up the evidence before photographing. Wings, droppings, shavings, spotting — all of it identifies the problem, and swept up it's gone.
Dry-sweep or vacuum droppings. Disturbance is what puts material into the air. Ventilate, dampen, and remove wet.
Which one you're buying should be stated explicitly, and your observations frequently determine it.
Incidental invaders from outside that aren't breeding indoors. One visit works because there's no hidden reproductive population.
Anything breeding indoors where eggs survive treatment — German cockroaches, bed bugs, fleas, pharaoh ants. The follow-up is the mechanism, not the upsell, and it's timed to the hatch rather than the diary.
Rodents, wildlife, and anything entering repeatedly. More construction than pest work — finding every entry and closing it with gnaw-resistant material. The half most often dropped from a quote.
Only for properties with genuine recurring external pressure — food premises, multi-unit buildings, sites next to woodland or water.
Because the rebound ends more treatments than any product failure.
Most products don't kill eggs. Whatever was laid before treatment hatches afterward, into a property that now looks treated.
Which produces a predictable shape. Activity drops sharply. Then partially returns around week two or three as eggs hatch — and that's exactly when people conclude it failed and apply a spray, which scatters the survivors and contaminates the bait.
The second visit is timed for that emergence, after hatching and before breeding age.
And activity in the first days is normal too — bait recruits insects out of harbourage, so seeing more of them early frequently means it's working.
You should be told all of this before the first treatment, not after you've rung to complain.
Preparation isn't a chore list. Each item does mechanical work.
Re-entry intervals are product-specific, and you'll be given the actual number.
Children, pets, pregnancy, respiratory conditions, allergies, fish tanks, birds, reptiles, beehives, ponds with fish, chickens, and edible plantings. Fish, birds, and reptiles need different precautions from cats and dogs, and several of these change the method entirely.
Placements are targeted. Baits and gels into cracks and voids rather than open surfaces; rodenticide into tamper-resistant stations where used at all, with trapping the indoor default — because an animal that eats bait dies wherever it happens to be, frequently in a wall.
Pollinators are a working constraint — flowering plants excluded from exterior applications, selective larvicides for mosquito work, and no treatment of honey bees.

The observation problem is worse commercially, because the person who sees the pest is rarely the person who calls. A porter spots something, mentions it to a supervisor, who mentions it to a manager, who rings — and by then the size, the location, and the time of day are all gone.
Which makes a simple reporting protocol worth more than an extra visit. Photograph it, note the exact position, report it the same day. Staff who do that give a technician the same five observations a homeowner would.
Documentation is the deliverable. Monitor maps, service logs, product records, and corrective action reports.
Deliveries and waste areas account for most commercial pressure — cardboard, produce crates, loading bays, bins, and drains.
Access time is the recurring constraint. Equipment that can't be moved during service never gets treated properly.
Multi-unit residential is a shared-structure problem, and treatment timelines need synchronising across units.
