You've heard something in the ceiling. Before you do anything else, note the time.
That sounds trivial. It isn't. When you hear it is one of four observations that, taken together, narrow a whole-building search down to a specific section of wall — and every one of them is something only you can record, because it happens when nobody else is in the house.
Rodent work has an unusual shape. The animals are the visible problem, but the job that ends it is finding a hole — and a hole in a building envelope is not a thing you find by looking randomly. You find it by working backwards from evidence, and most of that evidence is temporal, positional, and gone by the time a technician arrives.
The scratching that stopped at 2am. The exact spot the dog stares at. The droppings you cleaned up on Tuesday. The gnaw marks you noticed on the shed door and thought nothing of. All of it is directional information, and most of it gets lost.
So this page is about what to record, over the two or three days before anyone arrives — and what each observation actually tells us about where to go looking.

The time of day, and the pattern. Note when you hear activity and for how long. Daytime scurrying with rolling or dropping sounds is a different animal from night-time scratching, and heavy movement with thumps is different again from light quick scratching.
What it tells usSpecies, which sets the gap size we're looking for. If a pencil fits, assume a mouse does. Rats need more, but still less than most people expect. Activity after work means something got opened, or a new bridge to the roof was created. Activity after a neighbour's building changed means the population relocated.Dark greasy smears along baseboards, pipes, joists, and beam edges. The most reliable indicator of an established route there is — rodents travel with their bodies against vertical surfaces and oils build up on habitual paths. Invisible until someone points them out, and once you know what they look like you'll find the run yourself.
Fresh marks are pale; older ones darken. Gnawing on the exterior is frequently the entry point itself — an opening that was too small and got enlarged. Photograph it and note the height.
A dog or cat fixating repeatedly on one spot of wall or ceiling is worth taking seriously and noting precisely. They hear and smell what you don't, and they're frequently right about the location.
Almost everything downstream depends on which one you have.
Droppings identify it fastest. Mouse droppings are small and scattered widely — a mouse produces a great many per day and leaves them wherever it travels. Rat droppings are substantially larger and concentrated in fewer, heavier deposits along established routes.
Behaviour toward new objects is opposite. Mice are curious and investigate anything new within hours, which is why mouse trapping frequently produces results the first night. Rats are neophobic — they avoid unfamiliar objects for days. A rat trap catching nothing for a week isn't failing; it hasn't been accepted yet, and moving it resets the clock.
Range differs. A mouse may spend its whole life within a small radius. Rats travel considerably further and frequently nest outside while feeding inside, so a purely interior programme can miss the population.
Nesting differs. Mice in insulation, wall voids, appliance cavities, and stored boxes. Rats in crawlspaces, attics, burrows against foundations, and drains — which is why some rat problems arrive through plumbing rather than through siding.
Sound differs. Mice: light, quick scratching. Rats: heavier movement, gnawing, and thumps.
Click Here To Call Number(888) 804-6135Seal the hole. If you find the entry, photograph it and leave it. Sealing it with rodents inside builds a trap you can't empty — they die in voids, or chew inward into living space. Removal first, sealing second, always.
Clean the droppings before photographing them — and when you do clean, don't dry-sweep or vacuum. Both aerosolise particles. Ventilate first, dampen with a disinfectant solution, and remove wet, wearing gloves and a mask.
Put down bait indoors. An animal that consumes bait dies wherever it happens to be, frequently inside a wall — which converts a rodent problem into a weeks-long odour problem with flies and beetles feeding on the carcass.
Move traps you've already set if they're not catching. Rats in particular need days to accept a new object, and repositioning starts that clock again.
Remove the food and harbourage yet if you've set traps. Counter-intuitive, but competing food sources are what a trap is competing against — clear them at the same time the trapping starts rather than beforehand, so the trap becomes the attractive option.
The survey list, and your elevation observation determines which half we start with.
And the bridges: branches overhanging the roof, trellises, downpipes, and utility lines. Rats climb far better than most people assume, and cutting a branch back is sometimes more effective than sealing anything.

Materials that don't: expanding foam alone, steel wool that rusts, plastic sheeting, tape, and caulk on its own. Foam has a legitimate role as a sealant around mesh or metal — it has no role as the barrier, and a mouse is through it in a night.
Vents get screened, not blocked. Weep holes, soffit vents, and crawlspace vents exist for airflow and moisture control. Filling them creates a damp problem that generates its own pests.
Doors get sweeps and thresholds, which fix the most common ground-level entry in any building.
And penetrations get packed and sealed — mesh or wool into the void around the pipe, then sealed over.
If a pencil fits, seal it. If a thumb fits, treat it as a rat route and prioritise it.
Rodents contaminate surfaces and stored food with urine and droppings continuously as they travel — along every route they use.
Droppings, urine, and nesting material are associated with several transmissible diseases, and dried droppings disturbed into the air are a specific exposure route.
Which is why the photograph-then-clean-wet instruction matters. Ventilate first, dampen with a disinfectant solution, and remove wet, wearing gloves and a mask.
Discard gnawed or contaminated food packaging. Sealed metal, glass, and hard plastic containers are why serious infestations still leave some food intact.
Nesting material in insulation is a contamination issue as well as a pest one, and heavily soiled insulation is frequently better replaced than treated.
Rodents also introduce fleas, ticks, and mites, which persist after the rodents are gone.
Where contamination is extensive, cleanup is specialist work with its own protocols.
The openings explain how. This explains why — and it's the free part.
Food. Pet food left out or stored in a bag, birdseed, fallen fruit, unsecured bins, grills, compost, and grain or seed in a garage or shed.
Water. Leaks, condensation, pet water bowls, and standing water near the structure.
Harbourage. Firewood against the building, dense ground cover at the foundation, ivy on walls, clutter in garages and crawlspaces, and stored cardboard.
Removing these reduces the pressure on your envelope, which is what makes the sealing hold. A perfectly sealed building surrounded by food and harbourage is a building under constant test.
