If timber sounds hollow or gives under moderate pressure from a screwdriver, photograph it and note what it touches — a sill plate, a floor, a post going into soil.
Old drill holes in a slab edge or garage floor, disused stations in the lawn, a sticker on the electrical panel. Photograph it — a previous treatment history may mean a transferable warranty exists.
Spray them. A can of insecticide on a swarm kills the visible insects, destroys the specimens, and changes nothing about the colony — which is underground or inside timber and entirely unaffected.
Knock the mud tubes off. They're the clearest live evidence there is, and a broken-and-repaired tube proves current activity in a way nothing else does.
Vacuum the wings. They're the identification.
Sweep the frass. It's the difference between two entirely different treatments.
Seal or patch the damaged wood. Covering it removes the ability to assess extent, and the damage continues underneath.
And don't panic about swarmers outdoors. Termites in soil and dead wood outdoors are normal and near-universal in most regions. What matters is whether your structure is in their path, which is what an inspection establishes — not whether they exist nearby.
The most common false alarm and the most common missed alarm, and your collected specimen settles it in seconds.
Termite swarmers: straight, bead-like antennae; a broad waist with no pinch; and four wings of roughly equal length, frequently shed in piles.

Live entirely inside the wood they consume and never touch soil. Frass is their signature — hard ridged pellets pushed out of small holes. A soil barrier does nothing against them. Treated by localised injection where infestations are contained, or whole-structure fumigation or heat where widespread.
Require consistently wet wood. The treatment is frequently the water — a leak, a drainage failure, or persistent ground contact.
Group identification precedes any quote. Anyone pricing a treatment before establishing it is pricing for an unidentified job — and the pellets in your container or the tube on your wall are what establishes it.

StrengthsFar less product, minimal drilling, ongoing monitoring built in, and colony elimination rather than exclusion.

No treatment guarantees no swarmers next season. They can emerge from a dying colony, and neighbouring colonies exist regardless.

The cheapest part of the whole job, and the part that outlasts the treatment.
Break wood-to-soil contact. Deck and fence posts on concrete piers or metal standoffs rather than buried timber. Stair stringers off grade. Siding terminated above soil level.
Restore the grade line. Pull mulch and soil back from the foundation and re-expose weep holes and the top of the foundation wall. A visible gap between soil and siding lets you see a mud tube before it reaches wood — the earliest detection there is.
Move the wood. Firewood off the ground and away from walls, timber stored off soil, and buried form boards removed.
Correct the water. Gutters discharging away from the foundation, grading sloping away, crawlspace ventilation and vapour barriers, condensate directed away, and irrigation not saturating soil against the structure.
Fix the leaks — plumbing, roof, flashing, and window frames.
Remove stumps and dead trees near the structure.
And walk the perimeter annually with a torch. Twenty minutes a year, looking for tubes at the foundation and probing anything that sounds hollow. That's the same ten-minute discipline as before the first call, applied preventively.
Slab-on-grade. Entry through expansion joints, plumbing penetrations, and cracks — all concealed, so damage is found late. Barrier treatment means drilling through slab and attached hard surfaces.
Crawlspace. The most inspectable construction and the most commonly neglected. Mud tubes on piers and joists are visible to anyone who goes and looks — which is exactly the ten-minute check worth doing twice a year.
Basement. Entry through cracks, penetrations, and the floor-to-wall joint. Finished basements are the difficult case, because the wall covering blocks inspection.
Pier and beam. Good access and inspectable piers, but multiple ground contact points.
Additions and extensions. The joint between original structure and addition is one of the most common entry points there is — and a barrier installed before the addition existed does not cover it.
