Not go up there. Going up there is how people get hurt — a cornered animal in a confined space, defending young, with you between it and the exit. It's also, oddly, much less informative than the alternative.
Twenty minutes in a garden chair with a view of the roof line tells you four things an attic inspection frequently won't: which species it is, exactly where it's getting in, how many animals are involved, and — critically — whether one of them is making repeated trips, which is provisioning behaviour and means there are young up there.
That last one changes the entire job. Exclude a mother and seal the entry with dependent young inside and they die in the void — an animal welfare failure, a serious odour and insect problem, and in many places an offence. It's the single most consequential mistake in this trade, and it's avoidable by watching for twenty minutes.
Most wildlife species leave the structure at a predictable time. Sit down before dusk, look at the roof line, and they will show you the answer.

Sit where you can see the whole roof line, or the section the noise is coming from. A garden chair, a car, a neighbour's driveway. Far enough back that you can see the eaves and the gable ends without craning.
Start about half an hour before sunset and stay for twenty to thirty minutes.
Bring a torch but don't use it at the roof line until something is already moving — light on an entry point beforehand changes behaviour.
A phone video of the emergence is worth more than a description, and you don't need it in focus — movement, timing, and location are the data.
Diurnal, so a dusk watch may show them arriving to settle rather than leaving. Watch early morning instead — activity starting at first light with quick scurrying, and inside the attic you'd hear rolling or dropping sounds, which is stored nuts moving. Entry is frequently a neat rounded gnawed hole at a roof edge or gable vent.
Emerge after dusk, heavy and deliberate, and you will not miss one. They're the largest common attic animal. Entry is torn rather than gnawed — soffits pulled down, vents ripped open, shingles lifted. Inside, people describe "someone walking up there," which is roughly accurate.
Emerge in numbers at dusk in a stream, light and fluttering, over a few minutes. Counting the departures gives you a colony size estimate, which is genuinely useful. They cause no structural damage and use gaps that already exist, so the entry point can be very hard to find any other way.
Slow, deliberate, heavy night movement, usually under decks and in crawlspaces rather than attics.
Under structures rather than in them, with digging and a strong musky odour — and the emergence is at ground level rather than the roof line.
Light quick scratching, and no visible emergence — that's a rodent job rather than a wildlife one.
The most important thing your watch can tell you.
An adult making multiple trips in and out during a single watch is provisioning young. Out to forage, back to the nest, out again. It's a distinct pattern from a single animal leaving for the night and not returning until dawn.
Why this matters so much: buildings get chosen as nurseries, not as shelters. Attics, chimneys, and voids are warm, dry, defensible, and undisturbed, which is exactly what a female needs. That's the reason she picked your house.
So if you see repeated trips, say so on the call. It changes the method, the timeline, and what we bring.

A wildlife job during breeding season is not a same-day job. Anyone offering one either hasn't checked for young or isn't planning to tell you what happened to them.
Go into the attic if you suspect raccoons, bats, or anything with young.
Seal the hole. Everyone's instinct, and it's wrong four ways. You may seal an animal inside — it tears at the seal, gnaws new openings, and frequently comes downward into living space. You may seal a litter inside. The damage of getting out exceeds the damage of getting in. And it may be illegal.
Never seal a bat roost while bats are present. Bats are protected in many jurisdictions, exclusion is only permitted at certain times of year, and there are periods when it cannot lawfully be done at all because flightless pups are present.
Trap and release it somewhere leafy. Relocation is frequently illegal, rules vary by jurisdiction, and survival rates for relocated animals are poor — released outside its territory without knowledge of food, water, or den sites and competing with established residents.
Handle anything, including young you find, without advice.
Disturb droppings. Raccoon latrines and accumulated bat guano carry specific health risks, and dry-sweeping or vacuuming is what puts material into the air.
The method is a one-way device on the primary entry. The animal leaves to forage on its own schedule and can't get back in. Nobody handles anything, nothing is transported, and the animal stays in the territory it knows.
It's frequently the only lawful option, given relocation restrictions.
It's better for the animal, for the reasons above.
And it solves the building, because it's inseparable from sealing. Trapping alone leaves the entry open, and a den site that suited one animal suits the next — sometimes within days.
Where trapping is genuinely necessary: an animal that won't leave, a situation where a one-way device can't be positioned, an immediate hazard, or an injured or sick animal. Used deliberately, to the legal standard for the species.
Full inspection first, inside and out — and your dusk watch has frequently already found the primary entry, which shortens this considerably.
Every entry point gets found, because sealing four of five achieves nothing. Most animals use one main route and one or more backups.
Young dealt with before anything else.
Secondary entries sealed first, so the one-way device becomes the only available route.

Confirmation before final sealing. Activity checks, tracking material at the entry, or camera where warranted.
Then permanent sealing, with materials that resist gnawing and tearing: heavy gauge hardware cloth, sheet metal, and structural repair rather than foam and mesh alone.
Preventive proofing of vulnerable points not yet used — vent screening, chimney caps, soffit reinforcement, roof line junctions.
And this entire process involves no product at all. It's carpentry, timing, and patience.

Raccoon latrines — repeated defecation in one location — create accumulations carrying a parasite risk requiring particular handling.
Bat guano can support an organism whose spores cause respiratory illness when disturbed and inhaled. Large accumulations require containment and protective equipment.
Don't dry-sweep or vacuum any of it. Removal is done damp, with protection.
Soiled insulation loses its thermal value entirely, and where contamination is heavy, removal and replacement is correct rather than treatment. This is frequently the largest single line in a wildlife job.
Parasites persist after the animal leaves. Fleas, mites, and ticks remain in the void — and bird nests in particular release mites into living space once the birds have gone, which produces a second call weeks later.
And scent marking attracts the next animal, so deodorising is part of preventing recurrence rather than cosmetic.
