One breeds indoors, needs a multi-visit programme timed to an egg hatch, and gets substantially more expensive every month it runs. Another is telling you there's a leak in your basement. A third is telling you a drain trap has dried out. The fourth doesn't breed in your property at all and frequently needs nothing.
They're distinguishable by size, colour, and one marking behind the head — which means a phone photograph against a coin settles it in seconds.
And people almost never send one, because the word "cockroach" feels like it already describes the problem. So the call gets booked blind, the technician arrives without knowing which of four jobs it is, and the first part of the visit goes on establishing something you could have established from your kitchen floor.
Worse, the wrong assumption is expensive in both directions. A drain-species problem treated as a German cockroach infestation is a programme sold where a plumber's visit would have done it. A German cockroach infestation treated as an incidental invader is a single visit that buys two weeks.

Get scale into the frame. A coin beside it, or anything of known size. Scale is the single most useful element in an identification photo and the one nobody includes — size separates two of the four species immediately.
Get close, in good light. Phone cameras do this well if the subject is still. A few minutes in the freezer stops a live specimen without damaging the features used for identification — or, more simply, photograph a dead one properly rather than a live one badly.
Photograph from directly above. The marking that identifies two of the four species sits on the shield behind the head, and it's invisible from the side.
Better still, collect it. A sealed bag or a small jar beats any photo. Keep it — it takes seconds and it's conclusive.
And photograph the location too. A wide shot showing where you found it — beside a drain, in a cabinet corner, on a living room floor, near a door — because position is nearly as diagnostic as appearance.
Small, light brown to tan, with two dark parallel stripes running lengthwise behind the head. Found in kitchens and bathrooms, concentrated around warmth, moisture, and food — appliance cavities, cabinet voids, under sinks, motor housings.
What it meansAn indoor-breeding population. Fast life cycle, many offspring per egg case, and the female carries that case until shortly before it hatches, protecting it from surface treatment. This species does not resolve on its own and it does not resolve in one visit.
Larger, very dark brown to near black, glossy, and slow-moving. Basements, crawlspaces, drains, sumps, and beneath porches and mulch.
What it meansYou have a water problem. Leaks, poor drainage, standing water, or a drain issue. Correcting the moisture does most of the work, and the treatment component is frequently small.
The largest of the four, reddish-brown, with a pale figure-of-eight marking behind the head. Sewers, drains, basements, and boiler rooms — and they fly, which people discover at the worst moment.
What it meansA drain or sewer connection. A dried-out floor drain trap, a broken lateral, or an uncapped clean-out. Restoring the trap seal frequently ends it entirely — which is a plumbing job with a pest symptom.
Similar in size to an American but in the wrong context: living rooms, near doors and windows, single individuals, warmer months, often males, which fly well.
What it meansIt came in from firewood, mulch, or leaf litter. It doesn't breed indoors and there is no population in your building. Exclusion, a look at what's stacked against the walls, and frequently nothing else.
If you can't get a photograph, these two questions get most of the way there.
How big, roughly? Under about half an inch and tan is German — the programme species. Over an inch is American, Oriental, or an outdoor species — three problems that are usually cheaper.
Where exactly? Kitchen or bathroom, repeatedly, in cabinets and around appliances points at German. Basement, near a drain, in a crawlspace points at Oriental or American. Living room, near a door, one individual, warm weather points at an outdoor species.
Is it one, or is it a pattern? A single large insect near a door once is an event. Repeated small ones in a kitchen is a population.
Spray. Repellent products scatter cockroaches out of harbourage into voids nobody has mapped, drive them into adjacent rooms and neighbouring units, and contaminate bait so they avoid it — which stops the mechanism that makes a professional treatment work.
Use a fogger. The extreme version. Product goes across open surfaces where cockroaches don't live, the population gets pushed deeper into voids and into neighbouring apartments, and every treatment that follows takes longer.
Clean up before photographing. A dead specimen on a floor is an identification. Swept up, it's a description.
Assume it's the worst case. Three of the four species are cheaper problems than the fourth, and one of them is a plumber's job.
And do tell us if you've already applied something. No judgement — residual repellent near a placement makes bait fail, and it changes the approach.

Harbourage mapping first. Appliances pulled out where possible, cabinet voids opened, kick plates checked, and monitors placed where the picture isn't clear. The population sits where warmth, moisture, darkness, and lack of disturbance overlap — behind the refrigerator's motor compartment, under the dishwasher, in the void beneath a weeping trap, inside cabinet construction.
Treating the sighting rather than the harbourage is the most common technical failure in this work.
Gel bait into those overlaps — small placements in cracks, voids, hinges, and cabinet corners. No surface contact, nothing on anything you touch, and the total material measured in grams.
The transfer effect multiplies it. Cockroaches consume each other's droppings and dead individuals, so material moves through the population well beyond those that fed directly.
Insect growth regulators, preventing nymphs reaching reproductive maturity.
Dusts into voids — wall cavities, behind cover plates, beneath cabinet bases.
Targeted residual only where it supports the bait, kept physically separate so it doesn't contaminate placements.
And follow-up on the hatch interval.

And water matters more than food. Leaking traps, condensation on pipes, dripping taps, standing water in sink bases. Cockroaches survive far longer without eating than without drinking, which is why a single weeping trap sustains a population.
They travel through drains, waste, and decaying material and then across food preparation surfaces, transferring contamination mechanically.
They contaminate food and surfaces with droppings and regurgitation as they feed.
Cockroach allergens are a well-documented asthma trigger, particularly in children and particularly in multi-unit housing. The allergens are carried in droppings, cast skins, and body fragments, and they persist in dust after the insects are gone.
Which is a further reason not to spray at the rebound — adding broadcast product to rooms where allergen exposure is already a concern is the wrong response to an event that was always going to happen.
Cleanup is part of the job once the population is down, reducing both allergen load and the surface cues that attract new individuals.
German cockroaches in a multi-unit building are a building problem.
They move between units through wall voids, shared plumbing chases, and service penetrations — and a spray applied in one apartment at week three pushes them into the next one.
Effective programmes treat the affected unit plus those either side, above, and below, at minimum.
Sealing the routes between units — plumbing penetrations under sinks, gaps around waste stacks, service chases — is what stops the ping-pong.
And timelines need synchronising. Units treated on different dates hatch on different schedules, so the building never has a single follow-up window.
