That's not a sales technique. It's the arithmetic of this particular pest. The common container-breeding species typically stay within a few hundred yards of where they emerged, which means what's biting you on your patio almost certainly hatched close enough to walk to. And it hatched in water — not a marsh, not a pond, but a container. A saucer under a plant pot. A fold in a tarp. A blocked gutter. A bin lid.
Those containers are on your property, they're findable, and tipping them out costs nothing.
Which produces an unusual situation: the highest-value intervention in mosquito control is free, requires no equipment, and is entirely yours to do. A property where somebody walks it weekly and empties everything is a property producing dramatically fewer mosquitoes than the same property untouched — regardless of what anyone sprays.
So before you book anything, walk it. And if you're still being bitten after two weeks of that, you'll at least know the source isn't a bucket by your back door.

Three categories, and they behave differently.
Anything you can empty — saucers, buckets, toys, tarps, wheelbarrows, bin lids. Then store it upside down so it stops being a container. This is permanent while it's maintained, and it's free.
Gutters cleared and checked that they actually drain. Downspout extensions replaced or redirected. Low spots filled or regraded. Rain barrels screened with fine mesh. Tarps folded so they don't cup, or draped so water runs off.
Anything you can't remove — catch basins, drainage channels, tree holes, ornamental features, permanent low areas. Write them down. These are what a larvicide programme targets, and a list saves survey time.
And note anything over the fence. A neighbouring untreated pool, a blocked easement, a ditch — there are real limits to what treating your side achieves against those, and knowing about it changes the conversation.
Mosquitoes complete the aquatic stages quickly — egg, larva, pupa, adult — and in warm conditions that can happen in a matter of days.
Which means anything holding water for about a week can produce a generation, and anything emptied weekly produces none.
That's the whole mechanism. You don't need to eliminate every drop. You need to break the cycle before it completes — and tipping something out on a Saturday does exactly that regardless of whether it refills on Sunday.
It also explains the post-rain wave. A few days of heavy rain fills every container simultaneously. About a week later the yard is unusable. The rain didn't bring them; it started them — and knowing that lets you predict the bad weekend rather than be ambushed by it.
And it explains why spraying alone plateaus. Clear the adults and the containers you didn't find deliver a new generation on schedule. The improvement flattens well short of what people expected.

Then the source is likely off your property, or the resting habitat around your seating is doing more than the breeding sites. That's the case where treatment earns its place, and it's also the case where you should be told honestly what treating your side can and can't achieve.
Which is why we'd rather you did the walk first. It sorts you into one of three groups, and only one of them needs a full programme.
If treatment is warranted, placement decides whether it does anything.
Adults don't spend the day flying. They rest in cool, humid, shaded, wind-sheltered places — the undersides of leaves on shrubs and low branches, tall grass and damp ground cover, ivy on walls and fences, under decks and porches, behind stored items, along fence lines, and on the shaded side of structures.
Treatment follows the shade, not the lawn. Spraying open sunny grass achieves almost nothing, because that's not where they are.
And it follows the space you use. The vegetation within reach of the patio, the fence line beside the seating, the shrubs behind the table — rather than a loop of the entire boundary, which treats a lot of area for the benefit of nobody standing in it.
Flowering plants are excluded. Always — barrier products don't distinguish between mosquitoes and pollinators.
Vegetable, herb, and fruiting beds are excluded, and we'll ask you to identify them.
Ponds with fish aren't barrier-treated, and larvicide selection around them is specific.
Being clear saves money that would otherwise buy nothing.
Bug zappers. They kill large numbers of insects and mosquitoes are a negligible fraction. Much of what they do kill is beneficial.
Ultrasonic repellent devices. No credible evidence they repel mosquitoes.
Citronella candles and torches. A modest effect in a very small radius in still air, effectively nothing in a breeze.
Most repellent plants. The oils work crushed and applied to skin; a plant in a pot doesn't release enough to protect an area.
Fogging as a standalone service. Kills what's present and leaves nothing behind.
And two things that do work and get dismissed: a fan on the space you're using — mosquitoes are weak fliers and air movement is genuinely effective — and properly formulated personal repellent, applied as directed.
Barrier treatments last weeks, not months. The active material breaks down under sunlight and weather.
Rain shortens the residual and refills every container simultaneously.
Populations track temperature and rainfall. Warm wet stretches produce sharp increases about a week later.
Expect reduction, not elimination. Mosquitoes fly in from neighbouring properties and drainage corridors. A well-run programme makes a space usable; it does not create a mosquito-free zone, and anyone promising one is selling something.
Judge it by whether you can sit outside in the hours you wanted to.
And expect it to need less as the season goes on, because every site you removed is a permanent subtraction.
